WHY IT'S AWESOME? If you're fascinated by dragon lore, Septarian is the stone for you. According to Malagasy legend, Septarian stones are said to be fossilized remains of ancient dragons. While this is purely mythical, the formation theories are equally intriguing. They suggest that during volcanic activity, sea life was trapped and perished, leaving behind their remains on the ocean floor. Over time, chemical reactions occurred between the sediment and the deceased creatures, resulting in mud balls. As the ocean receded, these mud balls dried out, shrank, and cracked, forming the captivating patterns found in Septarian rocks. It's a truly mesmerizing stone with a mythical aura and a testament to the wonders of nature's artistic creations.
WHAT IS SEPTARIAN? Septarian, also known as Dragon Stone, is a unique limestone rock characterized by natural cracks and cavities filled with minerals like calcite, barite, and aragonite. These cavities, called "septaria," give the stone its distinctive appearance. While the Latin word "septum" means "partition," its exact connection to the number "seven" is debated among experts. Septarian typically exhibits colors ranging from white and yellow (from calcite) to browns and blacks (from other minerals).
WHERE IT'S FOUND? Septarian stone is primarily found in the United States, specifically in states like Utah, Colorado, and Nevada. It is also found in Madagascar, as well as parts of England, Australia, and New Zealand.
